City of Boulder Mural Project:
I completed the mural, titled "Boulder Creek", in May of 2009. It is located in the Elmer's 2 Mile Creek tunnel under Iris Ave., between Folsom and 28th St. It is 84 feet long and 6 feet high. I used exterior latex paint applied by various round things, and coated the finished product with 2 coats of urethane for long-term protection. The main goal of the mural was simply to add a little bit of color to a few people's day. I was not paid to do it. I received permission from the City, and they were also generous with some base colors of paint.
The image is an aerial depiction of Boulder Creek, running from the Continental Divide down to the plains to the east of Boulder. I oriented the painting with north being down, so that the creek in the painting matches the flow of the creek in the tunnel. Therefore, the plains are on the left and the high mountains are on the right. Valmont Butte appears near the top left corner, just east of where South Boulder Creek joins in. The red area depicts the sandstone foothills, which change to greener, higher mountains before reaching the alpine marshes above Nederland, and then some alpine lakes, and finally the Divide. I chose to omit all man-made things from the painting in order to illustrate the natural, unscarred beauty of the canyon watershed system... One exception to this being the group of three concentric circles near what would be present-day Boulder.
The project was a blast, and I hope to have the opportunity to do more public work in the future. If you have any questions about the mural (or my availability for commisions), please call or write at any time.
